CARTOON VIOLENCE

The non-violent LuckySports cartoons are funny and appealing. They have dazzling colors, adorable characters, fast action sports scenes and they put a smile on your face. Unfortunately, this is not the norm, because most cartoons contain violence - what you see is no laughing matter. Exposure to this cartoon violence can cause innocent children to behave more aggressively and affects them as adults - years later.

Believe it or not - there is more violence in cartoons today than in the evening TV news - and plenty of it! Sure it’s only cartoon violence, where the cartoon characters are resilient and always come back for more no matter what. But - funny or not - bloody or not - recent research finds that cartoon violence, even silly animation, can no longer be dismissed as insignificant.

Today’s children average over 40 hours a week watching some form of cartoons! The animation on TV specifically made for kids to watch contains more violence than it has in recent years. Most cartoons have the wrong influence on youngsters, especially boys, at a very young. The cartoons that are viewed by many kids possess a huge impact in a child’s mind. There is twice as many violence incidents in TV shows geared towards youngsters than any other types of programming. The average is eight (8) incidents of aggression or disrespectful behavior per hour.

What are children learning? They are learning what is socially acceptable from TV, movies, and video games – killing, robbing, fighting, inappropriate language, etc.

What message are kids coming back with? Because cartoon violence is portrayed in a humorous and unrealistic presentation - it disguises its malignance, thus fooling children. The environment needs to eliminate such thought and proceed with educational and non-violent cartoons for children. Kids are finding out that violence doesn’t always have consequences – it’s OK - funny even- to break things or harm someone.

There is a connection between viewing violence and disruptive activities. Study after study confirms it. In fact, too much exposure to violence even cartoon violence, can lead to hostility and bullying and can desensitize kids to someone else’s pain or give pleasure see others in pain and teach them force is the way to settle conflict. When children are kicking, hitting, fighting or making verbal threats - perhaps they are getting too much of the bad stuff. Maybe a solution to the problem is to put blinders over their eyes and have them wear earmuffs. (joke)

The violence in cartoons does have a greater effect on male children compared to female children. Advertising and endorsing such immorality is not just encouraging future violence but promoting it to young girls and boys, that violence in cartoons is allowed and is not considered wrong. The environment needs to eliminate such thought and proceed with educational and non-violent cartoons for children.

On the other hand, LuckySports cartoon stories do not advocate violence. Violence is replaced by action and the boo-boos of the Hoo-Doos. You’ll never see the Hoo-Doos with weapons like guns, bombs, or knives nor will you see them killing or fighting or using unsuitable words in any of our stories. We refrain from showing violence as a way to settle a conflict resolution. We hope children will imitate their LuckySports’ heroes, hoping to emulate them and be able to stand as brave and positive as they do.

Remember – you don’t want to act like a Hoo-Doo!
